Whether you’re looking to bypass regional restrictions or just want an extra layer of privacy while gaming, using a proxy with Steam can be a game-changer. However, Steam can be picky about the quality of the connection.
In this How to Use NekoRay Proxy Client for Steam guide, we’ll walk you through setting up NekoRay (also known as NekoBox), a powerful and lightweight tool for managing proxies, and how to verify your connection quality before jumping into your favorite games.
Step 1: Download and Launch NekoRay
First, you’ll need the software. Head over to the official NekoRay repository and download the latest Windows release.
- Download: Get the zip file compatible with your system.
- Unzip: Extract the contents to a folder where you can easily find them (like your Desktop or a dedicated “Tools” folder).
- Launch: Locate and open
nekobox.exe.
Tip: If this is your first time opening it, you might be asked to select a core. Selecting “sing-box” is generally recommended for the best compatibility with modern protocols.
Step 2: Configure Your Proxy Profile
Now, let’s add your proxy details. NekoRay makes this process straightforward.
- Right-click anywhere in the main window and select New Profile.
- Select Type: Change the protocol type to HTTP.
- Basic Info: Enter a Name (e.g., “Steam Proxy”).
- Details: Fill out the Server (IP address), Port, Username, and Password provided by your proxy service.
- Click OK to save the profile.
Step 3: Activate the System Proxy
Adding the profile isn’t enough; you need to tell your computer to actually use it.
- Find the System Proxy button in the top menu bar and click it. This routes your Windows network traffic through NekoRay.
- Right-click on your newly created profile and select Start. The profile should now be highlighted or show a status indicator that it is active.
Step 4: Verify Your Connection (The Quality Check)
Before opening Steam, it is crucial to ensure your proxy isn’t “blacklisted” or flagged as high-risk. Steam’s anti-fraud systems often block IPs with poor reputations.
- Open your browser and go to IPQualityScore.
- Check the Fraud Score: Aim for a score under 30. A higher score means the IP has been associated with suspicious activity.
- Check the Proxy Label: Ensure the “Proxy” or “VPN” label is set to False.
If your fraud score is high or the proxy label is True: You should switch to a different proxy server or provider. Using a “dirty” IP can lead to account flags or connection issues on Steam.
IMPORTANT: Before opening the Steam client, first launch it without the proxy enabled to check for any available updates. If an update is available, wait for it to complete, then close Steam and reactivate the proxy.
Step 5: Start Gaming
Once you have a “clean” check from IPQualityScore, you are all set!
- Keep NekoRay running in the background.
- Launch Steam.
- Your connection is now routed through your high-quality HTTP proxy.
Enjoy your secure and unrestricted gaming session!
